Day 258, Taking up a collection..

The formal parking ticket complaint process has run its course.  All that is left is to decide to either pay the ticket or become a scofflaw in Scranton.  As you can imagine, they denied my appeal. They know all about their parking meters, the are professional meter people. And in their professional opinion, I am a dope and being so, I deserve to donate 50 dollars to the Scranton Parking Authority. I believe in karma so one day, the shoe will be parked on the other foot. I am a patient person. No collection is needed. My oldest son paid has cell phone bill for the first time in his life. I will take that 50 dollars and send it to Scranton. I wonder if they take pennies..

On to more positive things. Today started out raining, pretty hard actually. I got to the office without any mishaps on the GSP.  Worked started off with a bang and just kept rolling all day. The next time I picked up my head it was after 2 pm. I looked outside and the sun was out. I took my sandwich and went over to the park. The plans of hot dogs and cheese burgers went on the wayside when the children ate the leftovers. I walked three more miles while eating my sandwich. The temperatures were in the low 70’s again.  Tonight my DW and I went to adult school yoga. After walking two days in a row, playing lacrosse last night and yoga tonight, I am looking forward to a good night’s sleep.

My DW worked an entire day on two cases. Through an odd series of circumstances the cases did not go off as planned and they took all day. Like I told her, it’s a day’s pay whether you bust your butt or not.  DS1 came home from his (not my girlfriends) and worked this evening. He has corralled DS3 to go out back and have a fire in the fire pit. DS3 worked out at the high school and chauffeured his mother back and forth to work so that he would have access to her van. DS2 tweeted a whole bunch today. Mostly musical stuff. He played a dulcimer at some point today and enjoyed it.

We have found another online business that we like. I like pistachio nuts and my DW likes cashews. Usually we will get them at the grocery store. The pistachios can be hit or miss depending on the time of year. We purchased both recently from and are enjoying the fresh nuts. Like coffee and a few other things, paying a little more for the items can make a big difference in the taste experience. My blog does not receive anything for this endorsement. I’m just sharing a good merchant. They are located here in New Jersey so UPS ground shipping is usually a next day delivery.

Picture time. Tonight’s picture comes from 2005 when we had an inflatable Mardi Gras guy in the front year. This was years before  inflatable holiday decorations came into vogue. We were definitely ahead of the curve. Enjoy!

Day 237, Happy Mardi Gras..

Happy Fat Tuesday!  We celebrated at work today by sharing this (see bottom) King Cake.   The cake come with a plastic baby that is to be hidden somewhere in the cake. The tradition is that the person that gets the piece of cake with the baby in it buys the King Cake the next year. The reality is that nobody ever finds the baby. And the same people decide that they enjoy King Cake enough once a year and purchase it to share.

During the day while I was working I had one of my computers showing a live web cam view from The French Quarter. I enjoyed the distraction during times that I was waiting for screens to change or files to upload. This evening my DW and I watched some web cams on the big monitor on DS3’s computer. It was fun to people watch especially when those people are in New Orleans enjoying Mardi Gras. We have already added attending Mardi Gras to one of our empty nest plans.

DS2 emailed me that his school served Crawfish Alfredo, King Cake and Beignets for dinner tonight.  He added some chocolate milk and was quite proud of his dinner. We had cheeseburgers and french fries. DS1 was working during dinner. He said tonight was a slow night delivering pizza. DS3, emailed looking for a computer cable. Unfortunately for him, the Army hat that he was looking for yesterday had already been shipped out. I will have to bag the wire up and send it out another day.

Last night I played lacrosse with the old men (and lots of 20 something’s). I had a few passes, I caught all of them that were reasonable to catch. I did not score. Oh well, I had a good time. We had just enough guys playing that I was able to stay on the field for the entire hour. What a pig I am. One of the three midfield players (they run the length of the field and back) who is probably 24 years old tried to get me to switch positions with him. I told him there was no way I was going to run from one end of the field to the other and back. He’s younger, let him run!

Tonight’s pictures are of the split screen on DS3’s computer tonight and this morning’s King Cake. We (DW and I) were watching two New Orleans web cams at the same time. People would walk from one camera screen to the other. It was fun. Enjoy!

Day 236, Happy Lundi Gras..

Lundi Gras is the Monday before Ash Wednesday. The translation (a translation) would be Fat Monday. The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday is obviously Mardi Gras.  Also know as Fat Tuesday.  Today also was Presidents Day. This is a quasi Federal holiday in the United States. The holiday is to honor the birthday’s of the George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  There was no mail service today. I guess the bills and the junk mail will have to wait another day. The UPS truck came today. It brought two Mardi Gras King Cakes that will be enjoyed tomorrow at my work and at my DW’s work.

Did you have the day off today?  I could have had the day off if I had thought about it. I decided to work from home since the plumber was coming to replace the hot and cold water spigots for the washing machine. Do you think corporate executives are over paid? I do. Do think your plumber is over paid? I do. He was in the house for all of five minutes. His son did the work.  He never took off his sunglasses. The bill for five minutes of work $120.00. Ouch. My DW worked today. She worked an extra two hours today. That will help pay for the plumber.

Kids, DS1 was stopped yesterday in Pa for doing 71 in a 55 zone. The officer could “not find” DS1 in the computer when he ran the driver’s license. This led the police officer to search my son and place him in handcuffs on the side of the road. After handcuffing him the officer asked for an alternate form of id, like a social security card. My son responded that the card was in his wallet which was in the center console of the car. The officer requested permission to search the car for the wallet. After he found the wallet and nothing else, he re-ran the driver’s license and the social security number. He released my son and told him to have a nice day. What do you think of that?  I think the whole thing was a ruse to search the car.

Day 229, Time to run off that prime rib..

It is Monday night here in New Jersey. I just got back from playing lacrosse with the rest of the old men. We had a good group there tonight. We had enough people to play two full teams with 5 subs on each team. I played attack for the entire hour, not coming off the field once. I had three shots. One went in, one just missed and the third shot really missed. I felt a little more confidant tonight after throwing around with my brother on Saturday.  On the really plus side of the evening, I did not get hurt. Not getting hurt is more important than scoring. I have to get up in a few hours and go to work.

Work for me was busy in the morning and the afternoon. The customers that I worked on Sunday afternoon never called me today. That was a real surprise. I was too busy to call them and I figured if they had issues, they would call. I will check in with them tomorrow afternoon if they don’t call first. My DW had a decent day at work. She made stir fry chicken and rice for dinner tonight that was pretty good. DS1 worked in the evening delivering pizza. He said the pizza place was slow tonight. The other two Scranton children, hmmm. DS2 had an ok day in clinical. Monday afternoon he has supervised clinical at a local elder care facility. The building is a short walk from campus. Today, it was a short, cold walk. DS3 has posted some odd things on Facebook. I will have to ask him to explain, or maybe I shouldn’t.

Next Tuesday is Fat Tuesday. I need to order my King Cakes tomorrow. I have procrastinated long enough.  We use Haydel’s Bakery in New Orleans. They do a great job. We used to use another company but after they messed the order up three years in a row, they got the heave-ho.  If you have never had a King Cake I would recommend giving it a try. We will have one at work to share with my co-workers. I’m not sure if  my DW wants one for work. I have not asked the Scranton kids either. I guess I will be texting the family in the morning.

Tonight’s picture comes from the Haydel’s website. Enjoy!
